The Rothenburg Museum

The Rothenburg Museum in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is much more than a building complex from the 13th century. Founded in 1258 as a Dominican nunnery, it proudly bears the traces of a vibrant history. Despite the destruction of the church in 1813, the preserved premises are of inestimable historical value, bearing witness to the lives and working conditions of the nuns many centuries ago.

The Museum Rothenburg

and the mysterious world of medieval convents

In the well-preserved areas of the convent hall, refectory, dormitory, and cloister, the daily life of the Middle Ages comes to life. Particularly impressive is the convent kitchen, arguably the oldest of its kind in Germany. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the culinary secrets of times gone by.

Treasures from long-forgotten eras

The Rothenburg Museum presents over 2,000 exhibits that offer a comprehensive insight into the history of Rothenburg. From the impressive “Rothenburg Passion” from 1494 to stone sculptures from the Middle Ages, which reflect the development of styles from the Romanesque to the Baroque – there is a lot to discover here. The thoroughly prepared Judaica section also illustrates life and the often adverse circumstances of Jewish life in the Middle Ages.

Masterpieces of craftsmanship and historical treasures

A particular highlight is the Baumann Foundation, which presents highlights of the arts and crafts. From faience and pewter collections to richly ornamented weapons, including a hunting ensemble of the French Queen Marie Antoinette and other historical treasures – here you can experience the history of weapons from the Stone Age to the 19th century.
