The legend of Georg Nusch and his heroic consumption of wine during the siege of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 1631 is a fascinating episode from the town’s history. Georg Nusch, who was mayor of the town at the time, became a local legend as a result of this courageous act.
The story goes that during the siege of Rothenburg ob der Tauber by the troops of Field Marshal Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, the town was in an extremely threatening situation. The imperial troops had surrounded the town and the inhabitants were in danger of starvation and destruction. In this critical situation, Georg Nusch decided on an unusual strategy to save the city.
Georg Nusch went to the imperial besiegers and made them an unusual proposal. He agreed to drink 3 3/4 liters of wine in a single draught on the condition that the city would be spared. This bold move deeply impressed Field Marshal Tilly and his officers, and they agreed to accept the offer and abandon the siege.
Georg Nusch fulfilled his promise and reportedly drank the wine without hesitation. This astonishing act of wine consumption saved Rothenburg ob der Tauber from disaster and made Georg Nusch a local hero.
